Nimchira was born in San Antonio, Texas, to a sixteen-year-old Choctaw/Irish girl.
Her father was Choctaw/Cherokee. She was not raised on a reservation and knew
little about her Indian heritage until she was almost 50. At age two she moved
to San Francisco and eventually to Hawaii with her mother. Her mother worked
as a welder on aircraft carriers in Hawaii. When Nimchira was four, in 1946,
they were sent back stateside because of the war.
Nimchira married when she was nineteen and divorced eight years later. In her
30's she returned to Texas and raised her four children alone. She currently
lives in Kansas, where she is the founder of a Native American organization,
Web of Life Enterprises, (WOLE) Inc.
WOLE is in partnership with the Native Indian Heritage Organization (NIHO)
on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. Together they have built a free
store for native people. They provide free clothing, school supplies, winter
coats, food, and other needed items. They also provide heating assistance
for the Elders in the winter.
Nimchira has been a creative person since an early age, and she has been
writing since she was a teenager. To her, life is for living to its fullest,
and it is for sharing. Through sharing we build lasting friendships and see
different outlooks and perspectives. She hopes that someday her writing will
help someone overcome a crisis or a difficult time in their life. It only
takes one small candle to light a dark room. She strives to be a lit candle.
