Beat Scene is a UK-based magazine dedicated to the work, the history, and the cultural influences of the Beat Generation. This has
included artists, musicians, and filmmakers, as well its best known and more obscure writers and publishers. The content largely
consists of articles, memoirs, interviews and reviews.
Beat Scene was founded in 1988 by editor and publisher Kevin Ring in Coventry, England. His personal fascination for the Beat Generation,
in particular Jack Kerouac, was sparked in 1971, but he was frustrated that information about Beat writers and their books was hard to come
by in the UK at that time.
The first Beat Scene and subsequent four issues were thin A5 booklets. Initially, there were only 200 copies produced and hand assembled on
the kitchen table. As well as the principal Beat writers: Kerouac, William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder, the magazine has featured
Lord Buckley, James Jones, Chet Baker, Richard Brautigan, Lew Welch, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Lenny Bruce, Ken Kesey, Jack Hirschman, Raymond Carver,
Robert Frank, Gregory Corso, Diane Di Prima, Jack Micheline, and Carolyn Cassady (who was the first of the magazine’s interview subjects). The
poet and Kerouac biographer Tom Clark has contributed to the magazine but was also interviewed by Kevin Ring.

California Beat Era-CA Palm Educational Non-Profit: CA Palm, based in California, produces documentaries
on the avant-garde aspect of American culture, past and present. The focus is on the underground perspective that
certain individuals maintain in order to create away from the mainstream. This aesthetic had strongly influenced
our cultural life in the middle of the last century but in recent years there has been an increasing loss of integrity;
affecting the art, music, and literature produced today. In America, commercialism has taken over with an increasing
tendency to make everything, including art, into a product to sell. Making culture a business enterprise kills the pure
spirit so essential in making good art, music, or poetry. CA Palm strives to keep this spirit alive.

The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) serves one of the most active segments of American arts and culture:
the independent publishers of exceptional fiction, poetry, and prose. Literary magazines and presses accomplish
the backstage work of American literature: discovering new writers; supporting mid-career writers; publishing the
creative voices of communities underrepresented in the mainstream commercial culture; and preserving literature
for future readers by keeping books in print.
Independent literary publishing requires a unique balance of art and business. Organizational strength and good
business practices are as necessary to the survival of these publishers as their editorial work is to the vitality
of American letters.
As the service organization to these publishers, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses guides literature
through the business of publishing.
CLMP believes that stronger organizations and operations result in their members' literature reaching a larger and
more diverse audience. CLMP's practical approach to this philosophy is two-tiered. Their services and resources
are designed to develop each member's publishing capacity through increased marketing and organizational skills,
while CLMP also serves as a nexus of communication, promoting shared learning across the entire field.
The field of literary publishing incorporates a wide diversity of presses and magazines: those with budgets of
less than $5,000 to those of more than $1 million; publishers working in large cities, rural areas, and every
place in between; and representing an astounding array of aesthetic and editorial missions.
The Council of Literary Magazines and Presses unifies the strengths of this diverse field by serving literary
publishers' common needs and goals while celebrating their independent voices.

Fairy Tale Review Press is dedicated to helping raise public awareness of the literary and cultural influence of fairy
tales, and to appreciating their power and depth as an art form. It celebrates fairy tales as one of our oldest and most
underestimated pleasures. Fairy Tale Review Press seeks to improve the critical understanding of new works sewn from
fairy tales, and welcome the public to revisit old tales across borders and time, to celebrate their transfixing power,
and to protect them for future generations of readers.
Fairy Tale Review Press also publishes Fairy Tale Review, an annual literary journal devoted to contemporary fairy tales.
(Review website for complete submission guidelines.) Founded in 2005 by Kate Bernheimer, the journal provides an elegant venue
for both established and emerging authors of poetry and prose.
Fairy Tale Review is not devoted to any particular school of
writing, but rather to fairy tales as an inspiring art form. Fairy tales represent hundreds of years of stories based on thousands
of years of stories told by hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions of tellers. The mind reels at their influence, omnipresence,
phosphorescence: like a star or a planet, they shine, ubiquitous and necessary as gravity, as air or ice. Lovers of fairy tales,
myth, fabulism, magical realism, or simply contemporary literature in general will delight in its pages.

to create significant work, in solitude and community, and by developing an international network to connect
writers and audiences. The Hedgebrook Retreat is on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle.
Situated on 48-acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound, the retreat hosts women writers from all over the
world for residencies of two weeks to two months, at no cost to the writer. Residents are housed in six
handcrafted cottages, where they spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on
the property, on nearby Double Bluff beach, or trails around the island. In the evenings, they gather in the
farmhouse kitchen to share a home-cooked gourmet meal, their work, their process, and their stories. The women
who come to Hedgebrook are writing in all genres, and are of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds, and levels of
writing experience.

How2: Kathleen Fraser launched HOW(ever) in 1983 as a journal for experimental women's poetry that subscribers received
in the mail. Between May, 1983 and January, 1992, two dozen print-on-paper issues of HOW(ever) were created. How2 is
the continuation of that project. How2 is happy to consider proposals for new writing features, critical features and
articles, new media work, and conference papers. To avoid disappointment, please bear in mind the style and scope of the

KNOCKOUT Literary Magazine is edited by Jeremy Halinen and Brett Ortler. It is a bi-annual literary magazine
published in Minneapolis, Minnesota since 2007. It is known for the wide range of styles it publishes, and for
its dedication to social causes.
KNOCKOUT'S inaugural issue featured National Book Award winners (Robert Bly),
former US Poets Laureate (Billy Collins), U.S. State Poets Laureate (Marvin Bell, Iowa; Robert Bly, Minnesota), as
well as winners of other major awards, including the $100,000 Kingsley-Tufts Poetry Prize (Thomas Lux) and the
Lamont Poetry Prize (Marvin Bell). In addition, several of the poets published in KNOCKOUT have been
awarded the Pushcart Prize. The second and third issues include work by other notable poets and award winners,
including a Nobel Prize for Literature recipient.
KNOCKOUT features a nearly 50/50 mix of LBGT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender/transsexual people) and
straight writers in each issue. Discussing this in an interview with The Minnesota Daily, Halinen said,
"It's something that I don't see a lot of other magazines doing, having a diverse group of writers, working to
bring them all under one cover."
KNOCKOUT donated 50% of the proceeds from its first issue to the Valentino Achak Deng
Foundation, a 501(c) non-profit which aims to support educational opportunities for those in Southern Sudan.

in its many formats, Roseville Arts supports local artists and brings artwork from around the world to the area. As a non-profit organization,
Roseville Arts is entirely funded by memberships, grants, sponsorships, fund raising events, and other donations.
With the dramatic growth in Placer County, the Roseville Arts Center's board of directors recognized that the center had to change
significantly to successfully continue its mission. Following the sale of its former facility, the Haman House, the center temporarily
moved its operations and exhibits to 405 Vernon Street. The Vernon Street facility, a former restaurant and bar turned office space,
was transformed into the functional 405 Gallery with the generous assistance and dedication of volunteers.
The 405 Gallery has been demolished to make way for a new City of Roseville parking structure. Roseville Arts now occupies the main floor
in a handsome new arts venue within the structure fronting Vernon Street.
The new Blue Line Gallery of over 5,000 square feet, showcases the works of regional as well as national artists and feature a

poetry readings. A special children’s gallery will provide a dedicated location for children’s programs, exhibits, and workshops.

PEN American Center is the largest of the 141 centers of International PEN, the world’s oldest
human rights organization and the oldest international literary organization. International PEN was
founded in 1921 to dispel national, ethnic, and racial hatreds and to promote understanding among all
countries. PEN American Center, founded a year later, works to advance literature, to defend free
expression, and to foster international literary fellowship. The Center has a membership of 3,300+
distinguished writers, editors, and translators. In addition to defending writers in prison or in
danger of imprisonment for their work, PEN American Center sponsors public literary programs and
forums on current issues, sends prominent authors to inner-city schools to encourage reading and
writing, administers literary prizes, promotes international literature that might otherwise go
unread in the United States, and offers grants and loans to writers facing financial or medical
emergencies. In carrying out this work, PEN American Center builds upon the achievements of such
dedicated past members as W. H. Auden, James Baldwin, Willa Cather, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes,
Thomas Mann, Arthur Miller, Marianne Moore, Susan Sontag, and John Steinbeck.

PEN American Center: PEN West based in Berkeley, California is a branch of PEN American Center and was
begun in the 1980’s with Robert Hass as President. After a brief lapse, it was revived by Valerie Miner
in 1988-89. PEN West has been in operation with a widening membership ever since with program emphasis
on literary readings/discussions, translation events, and Freedom-to-Write. There is an average of
eight events a year, including panels and bookstore readings, co-sponsored by the local bookstores,
U.C Berkeley, or The Townsend Center for the Humanities, which are open to the public. Each September,
PEN West hosts a Banned Book Event at Black Oak Books planned to coincide with public programs at other
PEN centers across the country. In honor of PEN translation month in May, PEN West often mounts several
events in bookstores and has recently begun to partner with the Center for Art in Translation in picking
the winner of the yearly Northern California Book Reviewers Award for translation. The branch has also
helped support POETRY FLASH, an important Berkeley literary magazine without whose help the other NCBR
awards for fiction, non-fiction, poetry and children’s literature would be impossible. Every Spring PEN
West hosts a members-only reception honoring PEN Members and Friends who have published a book in the past
year, giving branch authors an opportunity to display their books and meet each other, in addition to

POEMS-FOR-ALL (Richard Hansen) Sacramento, California: They're scattered around town -- on buses, trains, cabs, in restrooms, bars, left
along with the tip; stuffed into a stranger's back pocket. Whatever. Wherever. Small poems in small booklets half the size of a business card.
A project of the 24th street irregular press, which cranks them out to be taken by the handful and scattered like seeds by those who want to see
poetry grow in a barren cultural landscape.
Poems-For-All is essentially one guy --Richard Hansen-- making little poetry booklets as fast as he possibly can within those

Rare Book Room is an educational website for the repository of digitally scanned rare books made freely available to the public.
Starting around 1996 the California based company Octavo began scanning rare and important books from libraries around the world.
These scans were done at extremely high resolution using high-quality equipment, with some pages at over 200MB each. They were sold
by Octavo as commercial products on CD-ROM. In 2006 the "Rare Book Room" website was created which contains the complete collection
in medium to medium-high resolution freely available to the public through a web browser or as a PDF file. Some high resolution
versions are still being sold by Octavo through a separate website. As of April, 2010 "Rare Book Room" offers 558 books. The repository
includes books by Galileo, Newton, Copernicus, Kepler, Einstein, and Darwin. It includes most of the Shakespeare Quartos from the
British Library, the Bodleian Library, the University of Edinburgh Library, and the National Library of Scotland, as well as the
First Folio from the Folger Library. It includes Library of Congress copies of Poor Richard's Almanack by Benjamin Franklin, and
other rare editions: a Gutenberg Bible of 1455, Thomas Harvey's book on the circulation of blood, Galileo ’s Sidereus Nuncius, the
first printing of the United States Bill of Rights, and the Magna Carta.

Roseville Arts! (formerly the Roseville Arts Center) is an active community resource. Established 40+ years ago to promote the arts
in its many formats, Roseville Arts supports local artists and brings artwork from around the world to the area.
The new Blue Line Gallery of over 5,000 square feet, showcases the works of regional as well as national artists and feature a
state-of-the-art gallery complete with flexible exhibition space suitable for small musical performances, lectures, demonstrations, and
poetry readings. A special children’s gallery will provide a dedicated location for children’s programs, exhibits, and workshops.

Yellow Medicine Review: A Journal of Indigenous Literature, Art, & Thought. The title Yellow Medicine Review is
significant in that it incorporates the name of a river in Southwest Minnesota. The Dakota came together at the
river to dig the yellow root of a special plant that was used for medicinal purposes, for healing. Such is the spirit
of Yellow Medicine Review. The journal opens a new pathway for scholarly and creative expression. New paths lead to new places,
into the territory where emerging voices and visions are beginning to take their places among already established indigenous
writers, artists and scholars. They encourage submissions from indigenous perspectives in the area of fiction, poetry, scholarly
essays, and art. We define indigenous universally as representative of all pre-colonial peoples.
