The Eight Greats selected for this section were chosen because the young characters in this novel (at-risk kids of San Francisco) would have likely admired these role models.


He walked outside to find them and a dozen teenagers standing together looking at the wall of the building. The street side of the Golden Gate Youth Center has become a rubberneck traffic jam as motorists slow their cars to a crawl. Her mural project contains every imaginable color. It features a brilliant collage of tropical flowers, fierce white tigers, and swirling van Gogh stars. Delicate butterflies with gossamer wings flutter to the upper left corner, and a life-sized pair of wild horses are splashing through a ragging river from the bottom right corner. The mural also showcases eight portraits: Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Susan B. Anthony, Mother Teresa, John F. Kennedy, Gandhi, and Jesus.
