Greg Hannig Biography

Greg Hannig laughs and admits that he started his custom guitar making and guitar
repair company, Fretworks, in 1980 when his numerous woodshop projects just got
way out of hand. He is a self-taught guitar builder who picked everyone's brain
during his apprenticeship.
"I have been very experimental over the last few years," he explains,
"but my experiments have produced excellent guitars; they've all sold. I can
build with a specified custom request of course, but I mainly build guitars
which are first dreamed up in my head."
Greg told D.B. Pacini that he became a guitarist after he became a guitar maker.
"After I built my first guitar, I decided that I should know how to play it. I
had a guitarist show me how to play a chord. I learned how to play
from that first lesson forward, with the first guitar I ever created."
Pacini adds, "Greg intonated the guitars we used on the Emma's Love Letters
music CD recording. He is an incredible fret man. He also carves amazing wooden ducks.
They are all over his music shop, it must be another one of his wonderful woodshop
projects that has gotten out of hand!"
Greg supports the Guitars Not Guns (GNG) program. He says, "I'd much
rather see kids with guitars than guns. It's an excellent program."
